Noun

한아비 • (hanabi)

  1. (North Korea or obsolete) grandfather

Middle Korean

Etymology

From 하〮- (há-, to be big) +‎ -ㄴ (-n, realis adnominal suffix) +‎ 아비〮 (àpí, father).

하〮다〮 (hátá) belongs to tone class H!, meaning that its realis adnominal form is generally expected to be (han, hàn), not 한〮 (hán). However, this high tone is consistent with some other compounds, see e.g. 한〮숨〯 (hánswǔm, sigh (lit. big breath)).
