Etymology

First attested as Late Old Korean 漢賽 in the Jīlín lèishì (鷄林類事 / 계림유사)[1], 1103. In the hangul script, first attested in the Hunmong jahoe (訓蒙字會 / 훈몽자회), 1527, as Middle Korean 한새 (Yale: hansay), 하- (ha-, big; great) +‎ -ㄴ (-n) +‎ (say, bird). Possibly contaminated by (hwang, yellow). For a similar change, see 황소 (hwangso, bull).
