From Proto-Iranian *pr̥tuš (compare Avestan 𐬞𐬆𐬭𐬆𐬙𐬎 (pərətu, “bridge”), Northern Kurdish pir (“bridge”)), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *pr̥tuš (compare Sanskrit पर (par, “over”)), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *pértus.[1]
