Inherited from Proto-Turkic *teŋri (sky, heaven, god). Cognate with Old Uyghur 𐾀𐽺𐽷𐽾𐽶 (tnkry /⁠téŋri⁠/), Karakhanid تَنْكْرٖى (teŋrī), Yakut таҥара (tañara) Turkish tanrı.
