-στός

Ancient Greek

Etymology

Rebracketed from ordinals like τεσσαρακοστός (tessarakostós), from Proto-Hellenic *kʷetwərəkontstós equivalent to τεσσαράκοντα (tessarákonta) +‎ -τός (-tós). The *tst (> st) results from the Indo-European double dental rule.
