From Old Swedish -falder, from Old Norse -faldr, from Proto-Germanic *-falþaz. Cognate with Danish -fold. The noun suffix is a calque of German -falt, as in Einfalt (simplicity, simple-mindedness), equivalent to -faldighet, as in trefaldighet (trinity, threefoldness).
