-ište

See also: iste, işte, -iste, -iště, and -iște

Serbo-Croatian

Alternative forms

Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Slavic *-išče.

Suffix

-ište (Cyrillic spelling -иште)

  1. Suffix appended to words to create a neuter noun, usually denoting a place where an action occurs (noćište), and less commonly used to form augmentatives (ljudište).

Usage notes

  • In the older formations the ◌̑ accent falls onto the -i-, and is then retracted in Neo-Štokavian: blȁto > blatȋšte > blàtīšte.
  • Newer formations usually retain the accent of the base word: ìgra > ìgralīšte.
