-ske

Danish

Etymology

from Low German -sche, a noun suffix in the feminine of the adjective suffix -sch, corresponding to Old Norse -skr, see Danish -sk. The suffix mixed with the feminine suffix -se of Old French -esse.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): [-sɡə]

Suffix

-ske

  1. (now rare) Denotes a woman occupied with an activity, especially a profession.

Usage notes

In modern times, unsuffixed words are interpreted gender-neutrally, hence most words formed with this suffix are dated. A notable exception is sygeplejerske (nurse), which is now a unisex term; the unmarked sygeplejer refers to a different profession.
