Etymology

From Ancient Greek αἰγῐᾰλός (aigĭălós, beach, shore) +‎ -ia, though compare modern Greek Αιγιάλεια (Aigiáleia).

Coined by French zoologist and entomologist Pierre André Latreille in 1807.
