Potentially derived from a prehistoric hydronym Proto-Germanic *Abhara with the dative plural form of the collectivising suffix -iþi-. An alternative etymology posits a derivation from Proto-Indo-European *Abharitôs, a hydronym derived from the root *abh- (“bend outwards, shine”) or *ap-.
