Etymology

From austro- (south; southern, in this case referring specifically to Australia, where they were found) +‎ Ancient Greek γρᾰφή (grăphḗ, painting, drawing).

Coined by botanist Laurens Sparrius, by Australian lichenologist, chemist John Alan Elix, and by Australian lichenologist Alan William Archer in 2010.
