From bary- (heavy, from Ancient Greek βᾰρῠ́ς (bărŭ́s)) +‎ Ancient Greek φθέγγομαι/φθόγγος (phthéngomai/phthóngos, (to make a) sound; (to sing) a song), with a possible misspelling of φθόγγος (phthóngos) with the penultimate verb of φθέγγομαι (phthéngomai).
