From bary- (“heavy”, from Ancient Greek βᾰρῠ́ς (bărŭ́s)) + Ancient Greek φθέγγομαι/φθόγγος (phthéngomai/phthóngos, “(to make a) sound; (to sing) a song”), with a possible misspelling of φθόγγος (phthóngos) with the penultimate verb of φθέγγομαι (phthéngomai).
