Etymology

Berkel is first attested as bercle in 1214. Enschot is first attested as endeschit in 1164. Berkel derives from a compound of berk (“birch, Betula sp.”) and lo (“light forest”). Enschot derives from a compound of eind (“end, edge”) and Old Dutch *schid (“boundary, watershed”). Formerly two independent villages.
