Etymology

Berkel is first attested as berkel in 1266. Rodenrijs is first attested as roderinse in 1130-1161. Berkel is derived from a compound of Middle Dutch berc (birch, Betula sp.) and lo (light forest). Rodenrijs is derived from a compound of an inflected form of Old Dutch rōt (red) and risa (young branch, brushwood). Formerly two independent villages.
