Proper noun
Bhutanese
- Dzongkha, the national language of Bhutan.
- 2020, Simon Anholt, The Good Country Equation, page 52:
- Very conveniently for those of us who don't speak Bhutanese, nearly everybody in Bhutan speaks perfect British English since it is the language of instruction in their schools.
Noun
Bhutanese (plural Bhutanese)
Usage notes
As with other terms for people formed with -ese, the countable singular noun in reference to a person (as in "I am a Bhutanese", "writing about Bhutanese cuisine as a Bhutanese") is uncommon and often taken as grammatically incorrect. In its place, the adjective is used, by itself (as in "I am Bhutanese") or before a noun like person, man, or woman ("writing about Bhutanese cuisine as a Bhutanese person"). See also -ish, which is similarly only primarily used as an adjective or as a plural noun.
