Cognate with Scottish Gaelic Caitligeach, Catlaigeach, and Manx Catoleagh.

Caitliceach (genitive singular masculine Caitlicigh, genitive singular feminine Caitlicí, plural Caitliceacha, comparative Caitlicí)

  1. Catholic
    Synonym: Caitlicí

Usage notes

Caitliceach and Protastúnach are the formal words for Catholic and Protestant and are probably the most usual words in contemporary Irish. Traditionally, however, an Irish Catholic was familiarly called a Gael and an Irish Protestant a Gall, an Albanach (especially if Presbyterian), or a Sasanach (especially if Anglican).
