From Ancient Greek κόμᾰρος (kómăros, “strawberry tree”) +‎ Ancient Greek σταφυλίς (staphulís, “bunch of grapes”, alternative form of σταφυλή (staphulḗ)).

Coined by German botanist Joseph Gerhard Zuccarini in 1837.
