First attested as coernem in 1423. Borrowed from West Frisian Koarnjum, potentially derived in turn from Old Frisian Curra (a personal name) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -ingi- and hēm (home, settlement). Compare Korhorn, Kornhorn and Korrewegwijk.
