Calque of German Bundesrepublik Deutschland.

Proper noun

the Federal Republic of Germany

  1. (since 1949) The official name of a German-speaking country in Europe.
    1. (1949–1990) Official name of West Germany: a former country in Central Europe.
      Synonym: West Germany
    2. (1990–today) Official name of Germany: a country in Central Europe, reunified with the former East Germany.
      Synonym: Germany

Usage notes

  • In 1990, the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) ceased to exist and its territories joined the Federal Republic. The latter, therefore, has existed continuously since 1949. Reunification meant nothing other than the extension of its territories.
