First attested as fardincheim around 802-817. Derived from a compound of Old Frisian Fardo (a personal name) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -ingi- and hēm (“home, settlement”). The Dutch form of the toponym was borrowed from an earlier version of the Frisian name.
