- (mobile telephony) Initialism of Global System for Mobile communications.
A standard developed to describe protocols for second-generation (2G) digital cellular networks used by mobile phones. Defined in Europe in the early 1990s, GSM became the primary mobile communication standard worldwide, supporting voice calls, SMS (text messaging), and limited mobile data.
Used globally until largely replaced by newer technologies such as 3G, 4G LTE, and eSIM-based connectivity.
