From Ancient Greek γόνῠ (gónŭ, “knee”) + Ancient Greek στῦλος (stûlos, “pillar, column”).
Coined by Dutch botanist Johannes Elias Teijsmann and by Dutch botanist Simon Binnendijk in 1862.
