Short form of McGorrie, from Scottish Gaelic Mac Goraidh, from Old Norse Guðrøðr, from Old Norse Guðfríðr, from Proto-Germanic *gudą (“god, deity, divine”) + Proto-Germanic *frīdaz (“peace, tranquility, friendship”). Doublet of Godfrey and Jeffrey. Related to Icelandic Guðfríður, German Godafride, Latin Godefridus and Irish McGorry.
