Calque of Spanish golfo de México, first attested in 1550 on a world map held at the Bodleian Library. In widespread use since the mid-17th century, predating the independence of Mexico. Alternatively gulf +‎ of +‎ Mexico. Cognate of French golfe du Mexique.
