Etymology
From northern Middle High German hülfe, from Proto-Germanic *hulpiz. Cognate with Dutch hulp (“help”). Central German hülfe contrasted with Upper German hilfe, helfe, which are from different (though, of course, related) etyma. In modern German, the forms Hülfe and Hilfe were used in variation, but the latter was standardized in the early 20th century.
