Etymology

Borrowed from Arabic حَمَاس (ḥamās, literally enthusiasm), an acronym for حَرَكَة اَلْمُقَاوَمَةِ الْإِسْلَامِيَّةِ (ḥarakat al-muqāwama l-ʔislāmiyya, Islamic Resistance Movement). A few speakers pronounce it with /x/ to imitate Hebrew חַמַאס instead.
