First attested as henrick iden ambocht in 1340. Compound of the name of Hendrik Ye Wittenzoon and Middle Dutch ambacht (type of fiefdom). Wittenzoon was the scion of a banking family which financed the land reclamation projects the current village stands on; he received the fiefdom in 1376.
