A compound of Ancient Greek ἕνος (hénos, belonging to the former of two periods, last year’s, old, bygone) + taxonomic name Ophidia = “snakes [discovered] long ago”, coined in contradistinction with Caenophidia = “snakes [discovered] recently”.
