From New Latin, from Ancient Greek ἧπᾰρ, ἥπᾰτ- (hêpăr, hḗpăt-, liver) +‎ Ancient Greek ζῷον (zōîon, animal, beast), reflecting an obligate liver-dwelling phase of the parasites' lifecycles.
