Etymology

First attested as herbadingum in the 13th century. Derived from a compound of Old Frisian Herbad (a personal name) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -ingi- and hēm (home, settlement). The Dutch form of the toponym was borrowed from an earlier version of the Frisian name.
