Hindeloopen

Dutch

Etymology

First attested as hitinkufe and hintinlvofe around 822-825. Derived from a compound of Old Frisian hinda (hind, female deer) and hlop (jump, leap), apparently referring to a lower section of fencing which deer could jump over. The Dutch form of the toponym was borrowed from an older version of the Frisian name. Compare Hindlip.
