Hondsberg

Dutch

Etymology

First attested as hontsberch in 1444. Compound of hond (dog) and berg (hill, elevated place). It is not entirely clear what meaning hond conveys. It may refer to the arched shape of the hill (by analogy with a dog's back) or refer to the unpleasant nature of the location. Compare Kattenberg.
