From North Levantine Arabic حمص (Ḥumṣ), variant of Arabic حِمْص (Ḥims), ultimately from Ancient Greek Ἔμεσᾰ (Émesă), ultimately from Aramaic חֲמָת (Ḥamāth, hindrance, frustration, fortress) + צובָא (Ṣōwḇā, near, surrounding, station).
