• Though this term was more common in the 19th and early 20th centuries as the Falkland Islands sovereignty dispute was of low salience, its use is now restricted to Falkland Islanders and supporters of their position or individuals discussing the islands from their perspective or in a context involving them; for instance, the Falkland Islands Government uses Gobierno de las Islas Falkland rather than Gobierno de las Islas Malvinas in its Spanish communications. Supporters of the Argentine position thus may find it offensive; see English Malvinas for a parallel situation.
• Academic or official literature may occasionally use constructions such as Malvinas/Falkland to avoid taking a position on the dispute.
