Etymology
From Classical Malay كستيل (Kastila, “Castile, of Castile, Castilian, Spaniard”), possibly from either:
- Portuguese Castela (“Castile”) (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)
- Arabic قَسَاطِلَة (qasāṭila, “Castilians”), as in Arabic قَشْتَالَة (qaštāla, “Castille”) and بِلَاد الْقَسَاطِلَة (bilād al-qasāṭila, “the country of Castilians”) as per Potet (2013, 2016).
Both ultimately from Latin Castella, from Latin castella (“little forts, castles”), plural diminutive of castrum (“fort, defensive wall”). Cognate with Maranao Kastila, Maguindanao Kastila, Tausug Kastila', and Cebuano Katsila.
Likely not directly from Spanish Castilla as the expected word if borrowed during Early Modern Spanish would be *Kastiya since the ⟨ll⟩ digraph would have had the pronunciation of /ʎ/ closer to /j/ in Tagalog (cf. Spanish caballo and Spanish cebollas giving kabayo and sibuyas). Doublet of Kastilya.
