From Middle High German kump, northern variant of kumph, from Old High German *kumpf, *kump, *kumb, from Proto-Germanic *kumbaz.

Cognate with regional German Kump, Kumpf, Limburgish kómp. Also related with Dutch kom, English coomb (“dry measure”).
