Lake Borgne

English

Etymology

Derived from French lac Borgne (One-Eyed Lake), probably because it was not entirely surrounded by land, its eastern end having a wide opening to the Gulf of Mexico. French borgne could have also signified "dingy", as the water may have appeared when compared to that of the clearer Mississippi Sound.[1]

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /leɪk bɔːrn/

Proper noun

Lake Borgne

  1. A lagoon of the Gulf of Mexico, and formerly a true lake, in southeastern Louisiana.
