Finnish
Etymology
From Lappa- + -i (compare lappalainen). There are two main theories on the origin of this word:[1]
- Swedish lapp (“patch”), as a calque of the Sami endonym represented by e.g. vuowjoš (1743 hapax legomenon in the Sami variety spoken in or around Tornio, seemingly derived from the same word whence also Lule Sami vuojvve (“patch (of textile), gusset”))
- related to lape, (dialectal) lappea, originally in the meaning "remote place" (compare Moksha лапш (lapš), Erzya лапужа (lapuža, “flat”))
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /ˈlɑpːi/, [ˈlɑ̝pːi]
- Rhymes: -ɑpːi
- Syllabification(key): Lap‧pi
- Hyphenation(key): Lap‧pi
