Leuge

German

Etymology

Learned borrowing from Latin leuga.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈlɔʏ̯ɡə/

Noun

Leuge f (genitive Leuge, plural Leugen)

  1. (history) league (historic unit of measurement, especially the Roman league)

Usage notes

  • Not used in general parlance. For “an hour of walking” one can say Wegstunde. Historically, German Meile also had a comparable value, but this word is now vague and means any long distance.
