From Ancient Greek λύγος (lúgos, “something bendy, a bendable twig”) + -soma (“body”, from Ancient Greek σῶμα (sôma)), likely named due to the bending or winding posture skinks of this genus can take due to their long bodies.
Coined by British General and naturalist Thomas Hardwicke and by British zoologist John Edward Gray in 1827.
