From Proto-Indo-European *lewg- (“to bend, twist”). Cognate with Proto-Germanic *luką (“lock”), Sanskrit रुग्ण (rugṇá, “bent, broken”), Latin luctor (“I wrestle”) and Latin luxus (“dislocated”).
