Etymology
First attested as nieol in 943. Compound of the hydronym Maas and an element that has been variously interpreted as Proto-Germanic *niwialhô- (“hollow, low-lying land”), *niwialha- (“new house”) and Old Dutch *niol (“place at the foot of a hill”). Compare Aalst, Elst, Nieuwaal, Niel, Niel-bij-As, Nivele and Waldniel.
