Etymology
Potentially attested as gestele in 1147, attested with certainty as gestele in 1186. Derived from a compound of moer (“peat bog, area where turf is extracted”) and the common toponymic element gestel (“inn, guesthouse”). The element moer was added to distinguish the settlement from Luyksgestel.
