Nijemirdum
Dutch
Etymology
First attested as nuwe merden in 1399. Presumably derived from a compound of Old Frisian nī (“new”) and Proto-Germanic *mari (“lake, pool”) suffixed with the collectivising suffix *-iþi. The element nij was added to distinguish the settlement from Oudemirdum.
