Etymology
Compound of norr (“north”) + malm (“sandy hill; suburb”), formed in analogy with Södermalm. Inherited from Old Swedish Norræmalm. The term malm originally referred to the sandy slopes of the esker Brunkebergsåsen but, over time, evolved to be equivalent to "suburb" or "outskirt". First attested in 1288.[1]
