Etymology
Compound of söder (“south”) + malm (“sandy hill”), in analogy with Norrmalm. Inherited from Old Swedish Suthræ malm. Originally, it likely referred only to the area closest to Gamla Stan but over time came to encompass the whole island, which may originally have been named Åsö or Åsön (literally “the ridge island”). First attested in 1288.[1]
