Etymology
From Ancient Greek ὄρνιθ- (órnith-, the stem of ὄρνις (órnis, “bird”)) + ῥύγχος (rhúnkhos, “snout”). Coined by German physician, naturalist, physiologist, and anthropologist Johann Friedrich Blumenbach in 1800. The earlier proposed Platypus was already in use as a weevil genus and was displaced following the principle of priority.
