Potentially attested as palenbach in 1415, attested with certainty as Palenborch in 1562. Potentially a compound of paal (“boundary marker, border”) and beek (“brook, stream”). The second element may alternatively be either broek (“marsh, marshland”) or berg (“hill, elevated place”). Compare Rennemig and Vrusschemig.
