Etymology

From Ancient Greek φυτό (phutó, plant) + σαῦρος (saûros, lizard) +‎ -ia. By surface analysis, phyto- +‎ -saur +‎ -ia. The first fossils of phytosaurs were mistakenly thought to belong to plant eaters.
