Etymology

From Ancient Greek φυτό (phutó, “plant”) + σαῦρος (saûros, “lizard”) +‎ -ia. By surface analysis, phyto- +‎ -saur +‎ -ia. The first fossils of phytosaurs were mistakenly thought to belong to plant eaters.
