Etymology

First attested as vulgenhagen around 1198. Compound of prins (prince) and haag (preserve, enclosed area, hunting grounds). The element prins refers to the Princes of Orange, whose ancestors acquired the settlement in the 15th century. See also Prinsenbeek. Formerly an independent village.
